Landslide devastation in Wayanad

A terrible landslide after heavy rains in Kerala’s Wayanad district has caused devastation. Landslides occurred in different hilly areas near Meppadi early Tuesday. Hundreds of houses, vehicles and shops were submerged in water in Mundkai and Churalmala cities. Many died in this accident, while hundreds of people are stranded. Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that several teams have been sent to the affected areas for rescue operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and many others have expressed grief over this entire accident. Even PM Modi has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the families of each person killed in the landslide. Also, Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that the death toll has increased. Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi said on social media platform X, ‘I am distressed by the landslides in some parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones and prayers for those injured. Rescue operations are currently underway to help all affected people. The Prime Minister also spoke to BJP President JP Nadda and asked him to ensure that BJP workers do whatever they can to aid relief efforts. Apart from this, the PM also spoke to Minister George Kurien about the landslides in Wayanad.

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi also expressed grief over the accident. He said, ‘I am deeply distressed by the massive landslide near Meppadi in Wayanad. I have spoken to the Chief Minister of Kerala and the Wayanad District Collector, who assured me that rescue operations are ongoing. I have requested them to ensure coordination with all agencies, set up a control room and inform us about any assistance required for relief efforts. I will talk to Union Ministers and request them to provide all possible assistance to Wayanad. I urge all UDF workers to assist the administration in rescue and relief operations.

Major damage caused in Wayanad due to natural disaster

On the landslide in Wayanad, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said, ‘This morning there has been major damage in Wayanad due to a natural disaster. According to the information so far, a large number of people have lost their lives and many have been injured. I express my condolences to the families of the victims…I wish speedy recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi has spoken to the Chief Minister of Kerala and the Central Government is completely with the people of Kerala, whatever the need, the Central Government will fully help them.
Mourning declared for two days in Kerala

Landslide in Wayanad a heart-wrenching disaster- Kerala CM

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said “The landslide in Wayanad is a heartbreaking disaster. It rained very heavily. The entire area was destroyed. We have recovered 93 bodies so far, but the number may change. 128 people are injured. And they are undergoing treatment. We have made best possible treatment arrangements for the injured. We have opened 45 relief camps in Wayanad and a total of 118 camps across the state. , in which 5,531 people are living. Several divisions of the Army and Navy have been deployed in Wayanad. Services have also been provided by the NDRF team consisting of 60 members and on receiving information about the disaster from Bengaluru, the Prime Minister and many party leaders have offered assistance. He has assured us that we will work together to deal with this crisis.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan further said that additional Kaniv 108 ambulances have been called. In Wayanad alone, 3,069 people are in relief camps. Five ministers are involved in this relief work. People were relocated and an orange alert was declared due to adverse weather conditions. Dog squad will arrive for rescue operations. The instructions of the authorities should be followed properly. The local administration has been directed to ensure that drinking water, food and other essentials are provided to those living in the camps. Northern Range IG, DIG and Additional DG Law and Order will coordinate the operation. Control rooms have been set up under many government departments. I have directed that officers engaged in essential services should remain ready and on standby due to heavy rain conditions.
Urges everyone to contribute to Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund – Vijayan

CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, steps have been taken to deliver food and essential supplies after the landslide in Wayanad. Two vehicles carrying 20 thousand liters of drinking water will reach the disaster area. The health workers on leave have been instructed to return to duty immediately. No one can compensate for the loss of loved ones or properties, but we must extend our support and lift up those affected. In the wake of landslides in Wayanad, we must come together to help the victims. More assistance is needed to rebuild the area. I urge everyone to contribute and provide assistance to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF). Those who can, should donate. Entry of unnecessary vehicles is causing a lot of obstructions and should be strictly avoided. Everyone should be ready to cooperate. CM Pinarayi Vijayan further said, that Kerala Bank has already contributed Rs 50 lakh to the CMDRF. Sikkim Chief Minister has promised assistance of Rs 2 crore and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin has promised assistance of Rs 5 crore. In response to the disaster in Wayanad, the state has declared two days of official mourning. Public programs and ceremonies have been postponed. We request that the national flag be flown at half mast during the mourning period.
Till now 250 have been rescued, 300 soldiers deployed – Nityanand Rai

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that so far 250 people in Wayanad have been rescued and taken to safe places. 300 personnel from various central agencies have been deployed for rescue and relief work. Rai informed the members in Rajya Sabha about the relief and rescue operations. He also informed that PM Narendra Modi himself is monitoring the situation and has directed Union Minister George Kurien to visit the spot and assess the situation.
